ELD App Ratings 2026: Which Apps Drivers Love And Hate
Rules, prices and device details on this page were checked October 2026 against the official sources listed at the bottom. Where a provider doesn't publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.
Drivers are the ones who use an ELD app all day, so their opinion matters more than any sales demo. One public place they share it is the app store. We pulled the current Apple App Store rating and the number of ratings for 14 driver ELD apps on October 23, 2026. Here's how they rank, what stands out and how to use the data when you pick an ELD.
Method
We used Apple's public iTunes Search and Lookup API for the US App Store. For each app, we recorded the average user rating and the total number of ratings at the time of our check. A few notes on what we did and didn't include:
- Driver apps only. We used the app drivers log in with, not the fleet manager app, since that's where daily use happens.
- US App Store only. We didn't include Google Play this time. Google doesn't offer a comparable public API, and we only publish numbers we can pull directly from the source. Android ratings may differ.
- Snapshot in time. Ratings change as new reviews come in and apps update. These numbers are from one day.
- Ratings aren't reviews. We looked at the star average and count, not the written comments.
We matched each app to the company behind it based on the developer name in the store. Where an ELD brand's driver app is published under a different company name, we note the brand in the table.

What Stands Out
Samsara has scale and a high score
The Samsara Driver app has by far the most ratings in our set, with more than 50,000, and still averages 4.8 stars. A high score on a small number of ratings can swing easily. A high score across tens of thousands of ratings is much harder to fake and suggests drivers at many fleets find the app easy to live with.
Motive has a big base and a lower score
Motive Driver has the second largest count, at more than 11,000 ratings, with an average of 4.4. That's still a good score, but it trails Samsara. A bigger user base also tends to bring more complaints about specific features, devices or connection problems.
Small fleet apps score well
Apps aimed at owner operators and small fleets, such as TruckX, HOS247 and Matrack, score in the 4.6 to 4.7 range. Keep the counts in mind, though. HOS247 has 138 ratings and Matrack has 30, so a handful of new reviews could move their averages quite a bit.
Some well known names score lower
BigRoad, Rand McNally's DriverConnect and Blue Ink Tech sit at the bottom of our list, with averages from 3.2 to 3.9. Lower ratings often reflect frustration with connection drops, login problems or updates that changed how the app works. They don't necessarily mean the ELD is noncompliant, but they're worth looking into before you sign.
Trends
A few patterns show up across the list:
- Bigger platforms dominate rating counts. Samsara and Motive together have more than 60,000 ratings, far more than all the others combined. That reflects how many drivers use them.
- Most apps score above 4.0. Ten of the 14 apps average 4.0 or higher, so a good score alone isn't enough to stand out.
- Update activity varies. Most apps in our set were updated within the past two months, but a few hadn't been updated in much longer. Regular updates matter because phones, operating systems and rules keep changing.
How to Use This Data
App ratings are a useful signal, but they're only one input. Here's how to read them well:
- Look at the count first. A 4.7 on 30 ratings tells you much less than a 4.4 on 11,000.
- Read recent reviews. Sort by most recent in the store to see whether problems are new or old.
- Watch for patterns. Several reviews mentioning the same issue, such as dropped Bluetooth connections or slow log transfers, are worth asking the vendor about.
- Remember who writes reviews. Unhappy users are often more likely to leave a rating than happy ones, and some fleets ask drivers to rate apps.
- Test it yourself. Nothing beats a trial on a few trucks with your own drivers.
Also check the basics that ratings can't tell you: whether the device is on the FMCSA registered ELD list, what it costs and what the contract says. Our best ELD apps guide and best ELD devices roundup cover those in detail.
Charts and CSV
The full dataset is available as a CSV with each app's name, developer, average rating, rating count, last update date and App Store ID, so you can sort it, chart it or compare it with your own fleet's feedback. We plan to refresh it regularly and add Android data if we can source it reliably.
Questions to Ask a Vendor About Its App
If an app you're considering has a lower rating or a small number of ratings, ask the vendor directly. Good questions include:
- What are the most common driver complaints, and what have you fixed recently?
- How often do you release app updates?
- Which phones and tablets do you support, and do you offer a mounted device?
- What happens if the app loses its connection to the truck during a shift?
- How fast does driver support answer calls, and is it available around the clock?
- Can drivers use the app in Spanish or other languages?
Write down the answers and compare them across vendors. A vendor that's honest about past problems and clear about fixes is often a better partner than one that claims everything is perfect.
It also helps to ask a few of your own drivers which apps they've used before. Experienced drivers have often run several ELDs at different carriers, and their firsthand opinions can be more useful than any public rating.
Limits of This Data
A star rating can't tell you about compliance, pricing or how a vendor treats fleets when a contract ends. It also mixes reviews from different years, so an old problem may still drag down an average after it's been fixed. Treat these numbers as a starting point for your own research, not a final verdict.
What Drivers Say Matters Most
Across the apps in this list, the things drivers tend to care about are consistent. They want the app to connect to the truck reliably, show available hours clearly, change duty status in a tap or two and make roadside transfers painless. They also want quick support when something goes wrong. When you test an app, check each of those. If it does them well, drivers are likely to rate it well too.
