Lytx DriveCam Review 2026: Video Safety for Fleets
Rules, prices and device details on this page were checked October 2026 against the official sources listed at the bottom. Where a provider doesn't publish a number, we say so instead of guessing.
Lytx has been in video safety for a long time. The company says it has more than 27 years of experience and over 2.1 million drivers protected, and its DriveCam event recorder is one of the best known names in fleet cameras. Today, Lytx also sells a full platform called LytxOne with telematics and an ELD. So the real question is whether Lytx is the right safety program for you, and whether you'd also run your logs on it. Everything here comes from Lytx's own pages and spec sheets, checked October 2026.
Overview
Lytx sells several product lines, and it helps to know which is which:
- DriveCam Fleet Safety: the core Driver Safety Program, with DriveCam SF series cameras, in cab alerts and structured coaching.
- LytxOne: an all in one platform combining video safety and telematics, with ELD, DVIR and IFTA built in.
- Lytx+: Lytx video safety integrated with Geotab telematics.
- Surfsight: a separate line of AI dash cams sold through resellers.
Lytx says it captures more than 40 billion miles of new driving data each year, which feeds its risk detection models.
DriveCam Hardware
The current flagship is the SF400 event recorder. From Lytx's spec sheet, it's a dual facing camera, meaning it records both the road and the cab, with 1080p video at 20 frames per second, onboard AI, and cellular connectivity. Some newer Lytx features, such as certain AI detections, require the SF400 or newer.
Lytx also offers add on cameras for wider coverage around the truck, plus asset trackers for trailers and equipment. Lytx lists an installation service and a parts store, so you can have it installed or do it yourself.
Risk detection
Lytx's MV+AI (machine vision plus artificial intelligence) watches for risky behaviors like phone use and distraction, then sends in cab alerts so the driver can correct in the moment. Lytx also promotes features like fatigue detection and Dynamic Risk, which adjusts alerts to real world conditions. Lytx is clear that these are a driver aid only, and drivers should never wait for a warning before acting to avoid a crash.
Coaching Workflow
Coaching is where Lytx tends to stand out. The idea is that video is only useful if someone acts on it. The workflow looks like this:
- Detect. The camera flags an event, like hard braking or phone use.
- Review. Events are filtered, so managers see the ones that matter rather than every bump.
- Coach. A coach sits down with the driver, watches the clip together and talks about what happened.
- Track. The system tracks whether the behavior improves over time.
Lytx frames this as filtering out what doesn't matter and highlighting what does, so drivers aren't flooded with alerts. It also runs annual Driver and Coach of the Year awards, which tells you how central coaching is to its approach.
Event review center
For a fleet with dozens of trucks, reviewing video is real work. Ask Lytx how many events your fleet would generate per week, who reviews them, and how long each review takes. That's the hidden labor cost of any video program.
Pricing
Lytx doesn't publish pricing. You request a quote. When we checked, Lytx's site mentioned a limited time trial at no cost for up to one month, with hardware shipping fees possibly applying. Contract terms vary, so ask about:
- Hardware cost or lease for each camera
- Monthly service per vehicle
- Contract length and renewal terms
- Installation costs
- Whether add on cameras and AI features cost extra
For the ELD itself, Lytx says you can add ELD to a LytxOne plan on a month to month basis with no long term commitment. That's worth confirming in writing when you get your quote.
ELD Compatibility
You have three ways to combine Lytx with logs:
- LytxOne ELD. Lytx says LytxOne handles HOS logging, duty status and driver logs in the same platform as safety and telematics, with a driver app for status, reporting for audits, and roadside inspection tools.
- Lytx+ with Geotab. If you run Geotab, Lytx+ combines Lytx video safety with Geotab telematics, so you can keep your Geotab setup and ask your reseller how logs fit in.
- Integrations. Lytx lists pre built connectors with other fleet systems. For example, Fleetio lists an API integration with Lytx for meters and fault codes.
Whichever ELD you use, check that it's on the FMCSA registered list.
Insurance Savings
A big reason fleets buy video is insurance. Video can clear drivers in disputed crashes, speed up claims, and show insurers you run a serious safety program. Lytx has an insurance partner program, which suggests it works directly with insurers.
But be careful with promises. Any savings depend on your insurer, your loss history and how well you use the program. Ask your agent before you buy whether they offer credits for video telematics and what they need to see. Don't count on a discount you haven't been quoted.
Rolling Out a Video Program
Cameras don't make fleets safer by themselves. The rollout decides whether drivers see the program as protection or surveillance. Here's a plan that tends to work.
Before install
- Write the policy first. Spell out when video is reviewed, who can see it, how long it's kept, and how it's used in coaching and discipline.
- Talk to drivers early. Explain why you're doing it. Lead with exoneration: video is often the only thing that proves a driver wasn't at fault.
- Decide on audio. Some states require everyone's consent to record conversations. Decide if you need audio at all.
The first 90 days
- Start with a pilot. Put cameras in a handful of trucks and work out the review process before scaling up.
- Coach, don't punish. Early on, focus on conversations, not write ups. Recognize drivers who improve.
- Share wins. When video clears a driver in a claim, tell the fleet. Nothing builds buy in faster.
Measuring results
Pick a few numbers before you start, such as preventable crashes, claims cost and coachable events per 1,000 miles, and track them monthly. That's how you'll know whether the program is paying off, and it's what your insurer will want to see.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Long track record in video safety and coaching
- Dual facing SF400 with onboard AI and in cab alerts
- Structured coaching workflow
- Options to run ELD in LytxOne or pair with Geotab
- ELD can be added month to month on LytxOne
Cons
- No published pricing
- Coaching takes manager time to do well
- Driver facing cameras need a clear policy and buy in
- Could be more than a small fleet needs
Verdict
Lytx is a strong choice for fleets where safety is the main goal and someone is ready to own the coaching program. It's especially worth a look for midsize and large fleets with insurance pressure. If you mainly need compliance and a basic road camera, a combined ELD and dash cam package from another provider may be simpler and cheaper.
One practical tip before you sign: ask Lytx for a demo account with real sample events, and have your safety manager and one of your senior drivers sit through it together. If both of them come away thinking the coaching would actually help, that's a far better sign than any brochure. If either one is skeptical, find out why before you commit the whole fleet.
