For years, Trimble and Omnitracs were two of the biggest names in enterprise trucking telematics. Both still matter, but neither looks the way it did a few years ago. Trimble's transportation telematics business now belongs to Platform Science, and Omnitracs is part of Solera. If you're a large fleet weighing them, or you're already on one and wondering what's next, here's how they compare today.

Who Owns What

Trimble, now Platform Science

Platform Science completed its acquisition of Trimble's global transportation telematics business units in February 2025. That deal moved Trimble's fleet telematics products, used by many large carriers, to Platform Science. Platform Science's approach is a platform that runs on in cab devices and hosts apps from many vendors, so fleets can choose the tools they want on one device.

Omnitracs, part of Solera

Omnitracs is now part of Solera's fleet solutions business. Its main platform, Omnitracs One, brings together ELD and hours of service compliance, telematics, routing, dispatch, safety video and integrations. Its ELD options include mobile and bring your own device setups as well as rugged all in one devices.

Registry counts are entries on the FMCSA registered ELD list at our check. They show how many device and software combinations each company has registered.

ELD and Compliance

Both offer FMCSA registered ELDs with hours of service, DVIR and roadside transfer tools for US and Canadian operations. Omnitracs highlights automated logging, real time log visibility and alerts. Its HoursGo app is one of its driver facing tools. Platform Science and the former Trimble products also cover full HOS compliance, and many large fleets already run them.

If you're on a legacy Trimble or PeopleNet device, ask your account team about the roadmap. Find out whether your current hardware will keep getting updates, and whether moving to Platform Science devices is required or optional. Always confirm your exact device on the FMCSA registered ELD list.

Platform Features

Here's where they differ most.

  • Platform Science is built around choice. Fleets can install apps for navigation, workflow, safety, fuel and more from many vendors on one device. That's appealing if you want to mix and match tools or avoid being tied to a single vendor's suite.
  • Omnitracs offers a more complete in house suite. Routing, dispatch, safety, video and compliance come from one vendor and share data natively. That's appealing if you want fewer vendors to manage.

Both support integrations with transportation management systems, which large carriers usually need. Ask each vendor to demonstrate a live integration with your TMS rather than relying on a feature list.

Driver Experience

Drivers spend hours a day with these systems, so their opinion matters. Look at how many taps it takes to change duty status, how clearly available hours are shown, how easy roadside transfer is and how quickly the app recovers from a lost connection. Run a pilot with a few drivers on each system if you can, and get their honest feedback.

Pricing and Contracts

Neither publishes prices. Enterprise deals are quoted based on fleet size, hardware, apps and term. When you compare, ask for:

  • Hardware cost per truck and whether it's purchased or leased.
  • Monthly software cost per truck, split by module or app.
  • Installation, training and support costs.
  • Contract term, renewal and early exit terms.
  • Migration help if you're moving from another system.

Migration Planning

Large fleets rarely switch telematics platforms lightly. A move touches every truck, every driver and often the TMS, payroll and maintenance systems. If you're considering a switch between these two, or away from either, plan for:

  • A phased rollout. Move one terminal or division at a time and fix problems before going wider.
  • Parallel records. Keep the old system available until you've exported six months of ELD records and supporting data, as FMCSA retention rules require.
  • Driver training. Short, hands on sessions with the new app beat long classroom training. Make sure every driver can do a roadside transfer before the old device comes out.
  • Install scheduling. Coordinate installs with dispatch so trucks aren't pulled off loads unexpectedly.
  • Integration testing. Test every data feed to your other systems before cutover.

What the Ownership Changes Mean

Ownership changes can bring new investment and products, but they can also mean shifting roadmaps. For customers of both companies, the practical questions are the same:

  • Will my current hardware stay supported, and for how long?
  • Will my pricing or contract terms change at renewal?
  • Are any products being retired or merged?
  • Who is my account contact now?

Ask these in writing and keep the answers. If a vendor can't commit to supporting your devices through the end of your contract, factor that into your decision.

Safety and Video

Both companies offer safety tools beyond compliance. Omnitracs includes safety video in its platform. Platform Science lets fleets add video and safety apps from partners. If cameras are part of your plans, compare how footage, coaching and alerts appear in each system and whether they add separate hardware or fees.

Total Cost Over the Term

Enterprise quotes can be hard to compare because each vendor bundles things differently. Build a simple spreadsheet with every cost for the full term: hardware, software, apps, installation, training, support and any fees for adding or removing trucks. Then divide by the number of trucks and months. The lowest monthly number on a quote isn't always the lowest total once everything is counted.

Ask for references from carriers of a similar size and freight type, and call them before you sign.

Verdict

Choose Platform Science (former Trimble) if: you want an open platform where you can pick apps from many vendors, or you're already on Trimble or PeopleNet hardware and want a smooth path forward.

Choose Omnitracs if: you want one vendor for routing, dispatch, safety and compliance with tightly connected data.
